Dauntè Paschal

“The road of life twists and turns and no two directions are ever the same. Yet our journey comes from the lesson, not the destination.” ~Don Williams, Jr

“Making a Dash” was born as a manifest of gratitude to Portland for the opportunities that Dauntè Paschal, the founder of the project, obtained in the community during his life trajectory.

Paschal started cutting hair when he was still a 7th grade student at Harriet Tubman Middle School. As a young man, he had the dream of starring in the NBA, but he did not imagine that he would actually make the dream come true, but in a very different way.

While playing at a junior college, Paschal won over his basketball teammates with his ability to cut hair and, with the reputation he was creating, decided to enroll at Moler Barber College, where he graduated as a barber.

Motivated by his friend and client, the 2-time NBA All Star Terrell Brandon, he officially started his career as a professional barber, attracting players from different parts of the country.

Due to his success, in 2006, Nike invited him to participate in the All-Star Game in Houston as its official barber and, since then, he has been one of those responsible for the haircuts for photo shoot, commercials and events of elite players associated with the brand.

Always active in the community, Paschal created, in 2019, the “Making A Dash”, a scholarship fund to give young people in Portland the opportunity to attend barbershop college and, thus, allow them to also make their dreams come true.

NBA players came from all over the country to have a haircut with Dauntè Paschal

A MODEST APPROACH

We all want to live in a just society

We can prepare young adults in difficult neighborhoods for success with career-related certifications on which they can build on.

We all have things that we are good at, so why not share those skills with others?

Students are not sure what their plans are after they graduate from high school. Money for higher education is usually a problem. Scholarships are limited and no financial aid is offered.

It’s a great way to give back to the community.
